To be a EKF or UKKRO Kata Judge you must be a minimum of 3rd Dan although this is at the discretion of the Chief Referee. The theory behind this is that anyone below this grade may not have enough knowledge of the Kata that will be performed in competition. For example, under WKF Rules the majority of Kata performed are what most associations would class as higher grade Kata. I know that at European and World level this rule is set in stone.
